How Residential Address Detection Works (and How You Benefit)

Residential pickups and deliveries cost more in LTL freight. Carriers charge an accessorial fee whenever a shipment moves to or from a home or a non-commercial address. If that fee isn't accounted for up front, the carrier can re-bill you after delivery — turning a clean quote into a surprise charge weeks later.
Shipduo helps you avoid that. Depending on how you're shipping, residential addresses are either flagged automatically or selected by you as an additional service. This article explains both, and why it saves you money.

Automatic Detection: Quick Quotes & Checkout

When you use Quick Quotes or the Checkout feature, you don't have to do anything. Shipduo's algorithm automatically detects whether an address is residential and factors the residential surcharge into the rate before you ever see it.
That means:

  • The rate you see already reflects the correct residential cost.
  • Your customers at checkout get an accurate price, not an under-quote.
  • There are no surprise carrier re-bills after the fact.

💡 Tip: Because detection is automatic here, the quoted price is the price you can rely on — no manual flagging needed.

Manual Booking: Select It Yourself

When you book a shipment manually, residential detection isn't applied automatically — you select it from the Additional Services section.

  1. While booking your shipment, scroll to Additional Services.
  2. Under Pickup, check Residential pickup if you're collecting from a home or non-commercial address.
  3. Under Delivery, check Residential delivery if you're delivering to a home or non-commercial address.
  4. Add any other services you need (lift gate, inside delivery, appointment required, etc.).
  5. Click Save & Continue.

💡 Tip: When in doubt, flag it. Selecting residential up front costs less than a carrier re-bill, and many lift-gate and limited-access situations go hand in hand with residential addresses.

Why This Matters

  • Accurate rates: the price reflects the real cost of the lane, so quotes hold up.
  • No re-bills: carriers won't reclassify the shipment and charge you extra after delivery.
  • Better checkout experience: customers are charged the correct shipping price the first time.
  • Smoother delivery: flagging residential helps ensure the right service (and equipment) shows up.

Troubleshooting

  • Rate went up after I flagged residential? That's expected — the residential accessorial is now included, which means it won't come back as a re-bill later.
  • Got a residential surcharge on a manual shipment you didn't flag? Carriers can detect and re-bill residential addresses themselves. Flag it at booking next time to lock in the rate.
