How to Activate and Configure Your Checkout Rates

The Checkout settings control the live Shipduo rates your customers see at your store's checkout. This article walks through turning them on and configuring each setting.

📋 Before you start: You also need Shipduo added as a rate option in your Shopify shipping profile. See How to Activate Shipduo Checkout Rates on Your Shopify Shipping Profile.

To open these settings, go to Checkout → Overview in the left menu.

Step 1: Choose Which Shipment Types to Offer

At the top, toggle the shipment types you want to quote at checkout:

  • Small parcel — shows Shipduo small-parcel rates (for orders under your weight limit).
  • LTL — shows Shipduo LTL freight rates (for orders over your weight limit).

The weight shown next to each (e.g. "Under 150 lbs" / "Over 150 lbs") reflects your Weight Limit below.

Step 2: Turn On Rate Logic

Use the Rate Logic toggle as the master switch for showing Shipduo rates at checkout.

⚠️ Important: This toggle alone isn't enough — you must also add/enable Shipduo as a rate in Shopify → Settings → Shipping and delivery, on the correct shipping profile.

Step 3: Set the Weight Limit

Weight Limit (in Pound) is the threshold that decides whether checkout uses small-parcel or LTL rates. If the cart weight is above this number, Shipduo triggers LTL rates; below it, small parcel.
This is fully customizable — set whatever weight should switch an order from small parcel to freight. (150 lbs is just the default template value.)

Step 4: Configure the Rate (Rate Configuration)

This section sets the defaults Shipduo uses when rating an order:

  • Origin — the ship-from location used for rating.
  • Smart Dimensions Handling — the system automatically uses each product's dimensions from your store. The fields below are only a fallback, applied when a product has no dimensions.
  • Length / Width / Height (in inches) — fallback dimensions (used only when product dimensions are missing).
  • Class — fallback freight class for LTL. Click Change to get a suggested class based on dimensions and weight.
  • NMFC — fallback NMFC code.
  • Pallet Capacity (in Pound) — the maximum weight per pallet, used to split heavy orders across multiple pallets.
  • Result Sorting — how returned rates are ordered (for example, cheapest or fastest).
  • Checkout Handling Fee Type — how the handling fee is applied: Price (flat amount) or Percentage.
  • Checkout Handling Fee — the handling fee added to each checkout rate.
  • Backup Rate Name — the label shown to customers for the fallback rate (e.g. "Default").
  • Backup Rate Amount — the flat amount charged if no live rate can be returned.
  • Minimum Weight Allowed (LTL) — the minimum order weight required to return an LTL rate.
  • Custom Pallet Weight (LTL) — an optional override for the assumed pallet weight.
  • LTL Price Limit — an optional cap on LTL pricing.
  • Point of Sale (toggle) — when enabled, adds a $10 fee to the LTL shipping rate at checkout so your customer covers it.

💡 Tip: Because Smart Dimensions Handling pulls real product dimensions from your store, keeping your product dimensions up to date gives the most accurate checkout rates. The fallback values are a safety net, not a replacement.

Step 5: Choose Your Carriers

In the Carrier section, control which carriers appear at checkout:

  • Show Transit Time (toggle) — show or hide estimated transit time on checkout rates.
  • For each carrier (SAIA, ABF, Ward, Old Dominion, XPO, Estes, AAA Cooper, TQL, etc.):
    • On / Off — show or hide that carrier at checkout.
    • Change Label — rename how the carrier appears to your customers.
    • Connect carrier — link your own account for carriers that aren't connected yet.

Step 6: Set Default Additional Services

In Additional Services, choose any accessorials to include by default on checkout quotes. Anything you check here is factored into the rates customers see.

  • Pickup: Construction site pickup, Lift gate required at pickup, Limited access pickup, Inside pickup, Residential pickup.
  • Delivery: Construction site delivery, Lift gate required at delivery, Must notify consignee, Protective from cold, Appointment required at delivery, Over dimension/excessive length, Residential delivery, Limited access delivery, Inside delivery.
  • Order: Hazardous material, Additional insurance / excess value, Excessive Length.

Step 7: Save

Click Save to apply your configuration. Your Shipduo rates will now appear at checkout according to these settings.

Troubleshooting

  • Rates not showing at checkout? Confirm Rate Logic is On, the correct shipment types are enabled, and that Shipduo is added to the correct Shopify shipping profile.
  • Wrong rate type (parcel vs. LTL)? Check your Weight Limit — it's the threshold that switches between small parcel and LTL.
  • Rates look inaccurate? Make sure your product dimensions are set in your store (Smart Dimensions Handling uses them), and review your fallback dimensions, class, and handling fee.
