How to Set Up Shipduo Metafields in Shopify

When you install the Shipduo app, it automatically adds a set of metafields to your Shopify products. You don't have to create them yourself — you just enter or select the right value on each product variant so Shipduo knows how to size, rate, and route the shipment.
This article explains where to find those fields and what each value does.

📋 Good to know: These metafields are created for you on install. Your only job is to fill in the Dimension and choose the correct routing values per variant.

Where to Find Them

  1. In your Shopify Admin, go to Products and open a product.
  2. Scroll to the Variant metafields section (or open an individual variant).
  3. You'll see the Shipduo fields, including Dimension, Route Mode LTL, Route Mode SP, and Shipifi Routing.

Dimension

The Dimension metafield holds the product's dimensions, which the Route Mode settings use to size and rate the shipment.
Enter the value in LengthxWidthxHeight format, for example 15x10x10 or 48x48x52.

💡 Tip: For more detail on the dimension format and which dimensions to enter, see How to Add Dimensions to a Shopify Metafield.

Route Mode LTL

Used only when the order routes to LTL (freight/pallet). Choose the value from the dropdown:

  • (blank / not set) — Shipduo calculates the best box for the product, then places that box on a pallet. Use for most standard items that should be boxed and palletized as needed.
  • direct_pallet — Pulls the dimensions from the Dimension metafield and places the product directly onto a pallet (no boxing step). Use for tires, large items that don't need boxing, or items already in a manufacturer box.
  • as_is — Uses the entered dimensions as the final shipping dimensions (e.g. 48x40x45). The item ships on a pallet by itself, or it's a large one-piece item that ships as-is (e.g. a couch).

Route Mode SP

Used only when the order routes to Small Parcel. Choose the value from the dropdown:

  • (blank / not set) — Shipduo determines the best package for the product based on its dimensions and your saved packages.
  • as_is — Shipduo sends the exact dimensions from the Dimension metafield, because the product is already in its final package.

Shipifi Routing

Forces the shipment method regardless of weight:

  • force_freight — Ships the item as Freight (LTL) regardless of weight. Intended for oversized items that should always move as freight.

How Shipduo Chooses LTL vs Small Parcel

Shipduo decides which Route Mode to apply based on your store's cart weight threshold. For example:

  • Order weight below the threshold → Small Parcel → uses Route Mode SP
  • Order weight at or above the threshold → LTL → uses Route Mode LTL

(For example, under 150 lbs = Small Parcel, 150 lbs and up = LTL.)

How to Set a Value

  1. Open the product (and the specific variant) in your Shopify Admin.
  2. Enter the Dimension, then set the routing fields you need.
  3. Select each value from its dropdown.
  4. Click Save.

💡 Tip: Leaving a Route Mode blank is fine — Shipduo uses its default behavior for that shipment type. Only set direct_pallet, as_is, or force_freight when you want to override the default.

Troubleshooting

  • Don't see the fields? They're added automatically when the Shipduo app is installed. If they're missing, confirm the app is installed, or add the metafield definitions manually (see How to Add Dimensions to a Shopify Metafield for how to use Add definition).
  • Rates or routing look wrong? Confirm the Dimension is filled in correctly and the selected Route Mode matches your intent (as_is vs. direct_pallet).
